AHCT outputs have clamping diodes to V_CC. Applying a voltage to a powered-off output will result in a high current that can easily exceed the absolute maximum rating of 20 mA.

Hi Ladisch,

Do you mean it's not suggested to apply a voltage at the output pin? if it's powered off, and there's a voltage at Vo, what's the leakage current through Vo to GND?

There is no current limit. If the voltage is larger than the forward voltage of the diode, the current will be extremely large (for a short time, until the diode has gone up in smoke).

Hi Cera,

Above is the abs max table for this device and what the internals look like. As you can see if a voltage higher than VCC is applied it can and likely will damage that diode and damage the device.
