The recommendation for the SN74AHCT00 says it's 4.5-5.5 Volts, but just below that it says it has a larger voltage range of (2-5.5 V). The datasheet for the SN74AHCT00 says it's 4.5-5.5V.

I think the 'larger voltage range' statement is incorrect.

All devices with TTL-compatible inputs require a nominal 5 V supply. That 2 V – 5.5 V voltage range would apply to the SN74AHC00. (And the drive strength of 8 mA is not higher than that of the AC device.)

So the first sentence applies to the SN74AHCT00 (4.5-5.5V), but the sentence underneath applies to a different part that is not specified there? Perhaps it would be better to say, "The related part, SN74AHC00, has a larger voltage range (2-5.5V)..."

The text in the recommendation is just wrong. It was probably copied from some other device.
