SN74LV14A: Maximum driveable current

Guru 10090 points
Part Number: SN74LV14A

Hi,

In the data sheet, the output current of SN74LV14A is 25mA per output, and it is necessary to use the entire IC so that the output current does not exceed 50mA.

When using the power supply voltage Vcc=4.5V to 5.5V, the maximum IOL is 12mA. When driving 6 channels at the same time, the maximum output is 72mA, which exceeds the IC's allowable value (50mA). Is there a problem?

In other words, is there no problem even if all gates of SN74LV14A are driven at 12mA?

Thanks,

Conor

  • As long as you stay inside the recommended operating conditions, the electrical charcteristics are guaranteed.
As long as you stay inside the absolute maximum ratings, the device will not be damaged.

Driving all outputs with 12 mA will exceed the absolute maximum ratings, so it might get damaged.
(Please note that VCC and GND have separate limits, so it would be possible to drive three outputs high and three low.)
