SN74LVT8996: Testing 6 devices on backplane

Part Number: SN74LVT8996

I have 6 of the devices on a backplane and would like to fine a way to test all the connections and addressing.

Presently I do a bit bang to from a vector test with LabView and one of there 96 I/O cards, but it is hard to use for debugging.

Is there a better way to do this.

  • Hi John,

To be honest, none of us are familiar with this device. However, since it seems to be a JTAG connection, a JTAG interface would probably be easier than the bit banging solution.

What is the application? Is there a reason you can't use a regular transceiver?

    Best,

    Malcolm

  • We are a contract MFG for the backplane.  We have been building since 2008.  But now its time to rebuild the tester from scratch and I wanted to see if there is a better way. I am not that familiar with JTAG so I am not sure what to use for testing something like this.

I was looking for something that might be easy to setup and program.

  • Is it possible to see a schematic? The transmitting device in this case is the labview (?) DAQ, what is the receiving device?

If you're rebuilding from scratch and the JTAG/TAP functionality isn't necessary depending on what's on the receiving end, it might just be easier to replace the parts entirely with a more general transceiver. Otherwise I would have to do a little more research on JTAG to figure out what would work here. It might end up being a better question for the MSP team than for us.

  • Here is a snip of 1 channel.  The NI IO device is a 96 ch digital I/O ( PCI-DIO-96)

Address are pre-wired on the back-plan.  The I/O card will driver the input and monitor the output of the part.

It takes about 200 steps to test each addressed part.  All addressed, Bypass and broadcast functions are tested via the NI card.

  • Yeah, I think the best solution is just to get a PCI JTAG controller/boundary scanner. I don't think there's an easier solution here.

  • I will look into that option. Look like there are multi tap version that might work.  Thanks.
