SN74HC595: Can I use PWM on the Output Enable line to effect dimming?

I am using this device to drive a 7 segment display. Can I get a dimming effect with PWM on the Output Enable line? Any guidance on duty cycle, frequency or filters?

Hi Chip,

Yes it is possible to place a PWM signal on the enable pin of the SN74HC595D. This will create a dimming effect on your 7 segment display.

You shouldn't need any filters or any additional pieces to the circuit. You can refer to the pulse duration parameter in the timing requirements section of the datasheet to figure out whats the maximum frequency or duty cycle you can operate at. However something in the kHz should be no issue.
