We are working on DRV8301 -69M-KIT which has a CAN module. Can you kindly refer to some technical documents and example projects(code) for CAN protocol initialization and setups?

Please download my Application report http://www.ti.com/lit/spra876. It has many tested examples. Note that the examples were written for the TMS320F28335 device. However, they can be easily adopted for any 28x device with eCAN, provided you take care of the change in SYSCLKOUT speed and the resultant changes warranted for the CANBTC register. I request you to look at the Debug tips provided. Most CAN issues can be resolved by going through this checklist.

Application report http://www.ti.com/lit/spracq3 depicts lot of easy to understand waveforms and also provide a tool to introduce error at a chosen bit location.

The TRM chapter explains the CAN protocol implementation in the MCU. i.e. it explains the functions of the various registers/bits. However, it does not explain the protocol itself. For protocol information, refer to these excellent videos:
