Storing Data to external USB flash

Is it possible to write data to a USB flash stick through the docking station USB port, using the FTDI?  I have seen some reference to this, but it is not clear how to do it.  We need to store some data during the run, and be able to retrieve it with a PC.  Any help would be greatly appreciated.

  • The USB interface on the docking station is used for the purpose of JTAG access to the C2000 device.  I believe it may also provide a virtual serial port back channel to the PC.

  • Thanks Brandon.  What is the recommended way of storing and retrieving data from the microcontroller?  We need to store about 10,000 records of five floating point numbers per record.  The write interval would be about 0.10 sec.  Any suggestions?

  • I would suggest an external non-volatile memory device connected to the SPI or I2C interface for data logging purposes.  Especially if you need to retrieve this data by the application firmware running on the C2000 device at a later time.  What I mean is if you don't have some other processor in the system that can perform this logging function where the C2000 device could send the data across a peripheral communications interface.

  • Brandon,

Can you put this in more basic terms.  I am a novice.  I'm gathering that there is already a SPI or I2C interface on the control board or the  docking station.  I will begin studying that.  What kind of 'non-volatile memory device' would you use?  Is there some code example for this?

We are using the Delfino control card on a docking station (experimenter's kit), with CCS V3.3

  • Sure, an example of a non-volatile memory device is a serial EEPROM (either SPI or I2C interface), or Flash device with the same interfaces.  The reason I did not indicate one or the other is that I don't want to be in a position to dictate what you should use.  That is your decision.  Nevertheless, either of these could be used for data logging purposes.

There is actually a serial EEPROM on the TMDSPREX28335 Peripheral Explorer's Kit.  There should be some software examples to use this.

  • Brandon,

the Peripheral Explorer Kit EEPROM is a 256kbit device but the application mentioned in the first post needs about 20Mbit. Serial EEPROMs do not usually have such a large capacity (at least I cannot recall one from mind). What would fit here is a serial FLASH (e.g. SST25VF032B). The Peripheral Explorer Kit uses the McBSP hardware to connect to the EEPROM, which needs a little bit more setup than the common SPI channel. There is an example for such an initialization and use of the EEPROM at my TI C2000 teaching ROM, chapter 13, which is bundled with the Peripheral Explorer Kit.

Another option would be to store the data at an SD/MMC card, connected to the F28335 via SPI and use a FAT file system on it.
