TMS320F28379D: Data logging implementation through USB port of SPI to SD card

Part Number: TMS320F28379D
Other Parts Discussed in Thread: TMDSCNCD28379D, C2000WARE

Hi,

one developer is trying to implement the following SW functionalities:

  • Online logging of data or variables manually and automatically on an extern memory
  • Logging of data or variables in some memory of the microcontroller (on-chip memory) or another mounted on PCB without external access to later extract them to a extern memory

To have these functionalities they are considering 2 alternatives in terms of the physical medium:

  1. Do it through a USB port
  2. Do it through an SPI port with SD card converter

They haven’t too many previous development experiences in this regard and they would like to know:

  • What is the support that Texas can offer us regarding the necessary drivers?
  • What would be your recommendation regarding the physical medium to use?
  • Do you have application notes for this type of development?

TMS320F28378DPTPS is also considered if this influences the question

thank you

Olivier

  • What is the support that Texas can offer us regarding the necessary drivers?

Driver support for F2837x is generally limited to the basic C2000Ware examples targeted for the TMDSCNCD28379D platform:

    • ~\C2000Ware_XXXX\device_support\f2837xd\examples\cpu1\sd_card
    • ~\C2000Ware_XXXX\driverlib\f2837xd\examples\cpu1\usb
    • ~\C2000Ware_XXXX\utilities\third_party\f2837xd\fatfs
What would be your recommendation regarding the physical medium to use?

The SPI interface for SD card would probably be the most straightforward to use. USB supports various features and modes that may add unnecessary complexity.

Do you have application notes for this type of development?

There is this SPI-SD appnote from 2007. I am not aware of an equivalent USB appnote.

TMS320F28378DPTPS is also considered if this influences the question

The same would apply to the various F2807x, F2837x, and F2838x devices.
