TMS320F28075: Isink recommended vs max

Part Number: TMS320F28075

Hello,  I have a question about the recommended vs absolute max Isinking specifications on the TMS320F28075.  I need to drive an LED in an optoisolator directly from the pin.  I would like increase the drive current to 10 or 15mA which is less than the absolute max of 20mA but more than the recommended 4mA for I ol.  Redesigning is not an option right now.  Why is the recommended current so much smaller than the max - just to meet the 0.4V Vol spec?   Most importantly, can I drive 10 to 15mA continuously into the pin without risking damage since it is less than the absolute rating and I don't need to meet the 0.4V Vol spec?

Thanks
