TMS320F28235: Change Compiler from 6.4.12 to 21.6.0. LTS / longer compile and link time

Hi all

My customer is in the process of upgrading the compiler for their TMS320F28235 project from 6.4.12 to 21.6.0 LTS

This works but the new compiler is much slower:

6.4.12 requires 40 sec to compile and link

21.6.0 LTS requires 4 min to compile and link (linking is particularly slow).

The above numbers are for the same source code.

It this expected ? .... and can you comment on the reason ?

Might it be the struct > member notation ?

If there is one source file that seems to take much longer to build than others, then for that source file, please follow the directions in the article How to Submit a Compiler Test Case.

If the time spent linking seems to be the main cause of the problem ... Then I unfortunately need the entire CCS project. Zip up the project according to the directions in the article Sharing projects, then attach the zip to your next post.

Along an entirely separate line of thought ... If you think that host computer resources being used by CCS might be the problem, consider building the project from the command line. Please see the article Create and Build Projects Using Command Line.

Thank you for submitting a test case through private channels. I am able to reproduce the same behavior. I filed the entry EXT_EP-10597 to have this investigated. You are welcome to follow it with that link.

As a workaround, use the linker option --no_sym_merge. The resulting executable file may be a bit larger, but the link will finish much faster.

The linker tries to compact the DWARF information in COFF executable files; it is this compaction step that is taking inordinately long.

The customer should seriously consider converting the project to EABI, which doesn't have this problem.
