TMS320F28335: USB probe can't be verified and when close the USB power switch, only the LD1 of the control card lights up

Part Number: TMS320F28335
Other Parts Discussed in Thread: C2000WARE

hello, I bought a TMDSPREX28335 kit a month ago, it  always works well , but today when I started to run a simple code( on debug mode) , the connection of the board with my computer was interrupted suddenly . then I tried to connect again, but it failed. so I switched off the USB power, and turn on again. once turn on the USB power switch, the LD1-LD5 on the board will flash once(can't light up again, usually, the LDs can light up) , and the LD1 of control card keeps lighting up status.

there was an error message that said the voltage is too low.

I don't know what's the reason, is the board broke?

does it caused by my code?

thanks in advance!

  • I used another 5V adapter to power the board,  there was the same phenomenon that the LD1-LD5 flash once,  I guess the power module is broken, how can I repair it? can I sent to you and help me to repair it?

  • ? ?,

The board was likely damaged by ESD or EOS. EOS is common when using the wrong voltage input level of connected devices(3.3V max on this device), and ESD is common when proper grounding precautions are not taken.

We do not repair boards, If you are interested in fixing the board it may be possible. Most likely failed components are the C28x device and the power supply device.

Schematics are available in C2000ware, best of luck debugging.

  • Hi Cody, Thanks very much for your reply! you said "Most likely failed components are the C28x device and the power supply device." do you mean the control card and the base board are all damaged?  so I can't replace a new control card or board, but have to buy a new kit?

when the trip happened,  my board only was connecting with my laptop via USB, and didn't connect with any other external device.

regard to the proper grounding precausion,  how to do it? I always put the board on my desk., there is no other suffs in touch with it.

  • Hi Cody,  I contacted with  TI online support, the service staff said I need your diagnose result and determine if I can return the damaged kit and get a new one. Could you please check if the damage is related with hardware and can I get a new one? since the evaluation kit is bought just a month ago, and I operated as usual when the fault happened, the board didn't connect any other things except for the computer via the USB probe. As you know, the kit is expensive, the damage is a big loss for me. Thanks very much!

  • Hello ? ?,

you said "Most likely failed components are the C28x device and the power supply device." do you mean the control card and the base board are all damaged?  so I can't replace a new control card or board, but have to buy a new kit?

It is possible for both the baseboard or the controlCARD to be damaged. I cannot say with the information you have given me. If you wish to determine which one is damaged you will need to debug the board yourself. Based on your previous posts I would recommend starting by looking for power to ground shorts. In my experience these are usually caused by a short within  the C28x device, or the power regulation devices.

If you determine that it is just the controlCARD that is damaged then you can simply purchase another one.

regard to the proper grounding precausion,  how to do it? I always put the board on my desk., there is no other suffs in touch with it.

Please note that you simply touching the board is a potential for ESD damage to occur. Surfaces should be static dissipative. Please see the following for General ESD mitigation. https://www.esda.org/esd-overview/esd-fundamentals/part-3-basic-esd-control-procedures-and-materials/

Could you please check if the damage is related with hardware and can I get a new one?

The hardware arrived in working order and this kit has a long standing history of reliability. Therefore it is very unlikely that this is caused by a hardware issue which indicates the next most likely issue to be EOS due to improper handling. Because of this we will not issue a return.

  • Hi Cody, thanks for your kind and patient answer,  I will try my best to debug and repair the kit.  Happy thanksgiving day, thank you very much!
