Hi Team,

I set up the gui software according to the quick start guide on the included usb stick and connected my motor... performed motor identification process and then attempted to run motor in speed control mode. motor did nothing for several seconds then briefly spun for aprox 1 second then then U phase of the inverter shorted out and blew the fuse and the U phase current shunt resistor.

  • Which GUI are you using?

    You need to use the identified motor parameters to rebuild the related lab project within CCS, and then use the GUI with the re-building project to run a new motor if you using the universal GUI.

  • Hi, Im trying to get an answer as to what could have caused the inverter to almost instantly burn out when operating a motor using the universal GUI.

    Is it possible the motor developed an interwinding short and caused the inverter to blow from overcurrent?

    Does the inverter not have overcurrent detection to protect from this? 

    Is the overcurrent protection not enabled when using GUI?

    I have ordered parts to try to fix my kit but i would like to understand what happened first before i waste more time and money.

  • As mentioned above, you need to run a motor with the correct parameters and labs using the universal GUI for High Voltage Kit. If the labs are not for high voltage kit, the kit will be damaged by over current or the other faults. The kit has a over current circuit which will generate a fault output signal, the software will use this fault to turn-off the PWM outputs and stop the motor.

    If you run a motor with wrong parameters, the motor will be stall and the kit will be also damaged for over current if you didn't set the right over current protection threshold on high voltage kit.

    Please have a look at the hardware guide before you try to run a motor with the high voltage kit.

  • Hi, i tried to respond on the forum but my access to post to the forum was removed... I emailed TI to try to get my access restored but they did not respond. It appears i am able to post again now.

  • As i said, i was following the directions on the quick start guide for the high voltage motor kit that was included on the usb stick in the box with the kit. I don't think i was using the wrong software/ Labs. I had not yet progressed to working through the labs to explore the full functionality of the system i just wanted to confirm that everything was working using the GUI quick start guide.

  • I used the motor parameter self identification and the motor rotated for a few seconds then emitted some loud noises and stopped rotating. when the process was complete the gui displayed the identified parameters (unfortunately i forgot to write them down). I then tried to run the motor in speed mode at 200rpm and the motor spun for a second or so then the inverter blew. The motor i was using is from a questionable supplier so my theory is that the motor had poor insulation resistance and developed an interwinding short causing overcurrent failure of the inverter. This is why i asked if the inverter has overcurrent protection when operating with the gui as per the quick start guide.

    I managed to replace the burned out parts and i am almost ready to try the kit again with a different motor... should i follow the quick start guide that was included with the kit or is there a better place i should start to learn how this works?

  • Recommend you to run the related labs within CCS, and follow the InstaSPIN lab guide to set the right parameters to identify or run a new motor. The GUI is better to demo the InstasSPIN-FOC with a tested motor.

    The hardware kit has a overcurrent protection, but the default value should be not correct for the motor or the kit, so you'd better to use a AC source or DC power supply to run/identify a new motor before you are familiar with the hardware kit and the labs.

  • Hi, i had a chance to get started with the kit again. I started with lab 1 and i was able to get everything working and blink the led on the control card and was able to change frequency of blinking... The lab also mentions there should be 50% duty pwm signal present at the inverter but i have no signal at the inverter. I checked U,V,W high and low test points on the board and the inverter outputs and i have no signal there. 

    Is this normal? i want to proceed carefully
