TMS320F2808: suggestion for migration to a higher performance DSP

Part Number: TMS320F2808
Other Parts Discussed in Thread: TMS320F280039C, TMS320F28379S, TMS320F28379D, TMS320F28388D, TMS320F28384S

Hi Sir,

In our product we had used TMS320F2808 for years, and due to our design is getting more and more complex, we will need to migrate to a higher performance DSP
TMS320F2808 is a fixed-point micro-controller(no FPU, no CLA)
clock speed is 100MHz, with 36k RAM
we are considering to replace it with a higher-end DSP, with
  • higher clock speed
  • larger RAM
  • SPI and UART interface
  • (most important) the same development software environment(ie. CCS studio), hopefully porting our original code to the new DSP does not take too much effort
Any suggestion would be really appreciated, thanks.
  • I suggest looking at TMS320F280039C series.

This will be a pretty seamless migration, a big upgrade in capability, and lower prices.

This part starts production in March.

  • Hi Chris,

Thanks. Though I was expecting a higher-end DSP, TMS320F280039C operates at 120MHz which is roughly the same as TMS320F2808(100MHz). Do you have other suggestion ? Thanks in advance !

  • The flash on these newer devices results in a much higher effective MHz/MIPS than previous generations. The 120 MHz is probably 50%+ faster, especially when combined with other math accelerators found on these newer devices. Also, the F28003x has an optional parallel processing unit the CLA.

But if you want to look at higher MHz there are 200 MHz CPU(s) available on some other series the F2837x and F2838x. These also offer single/dual CPU+CLA subsystems.
