LAUNCHXL-F28379D: How to connect with motor resolver signals

Hi there,

Hopefully this is an easy question, and I'm just struggling to understand this; how can I connect a resolver signals from an IPM machine to the F28379D launchpad? I know that it has the SDFM digital filters; are these ADC's? If so, can I directly connect the SIN and COS signals from a motor resolver to the SDFM pins on the launchpad? If not, is there a resolver-2-digital board I need to facilitate this? Any feedback or documentation on how to do this would be appreciated, as this is my first time working with a resolver, nor am I super familiar with the launchpad in the first place.

If it's helpful to the question, I am trying to connect the resolver to obtain motor speed/angle data to create a closed-loop controller.

Hello Michael,

The SDFM channels are for interfacing to a sigma-delta ADC. It's a very specialized interface that will not work for what you are trying to do.

Looking at the TMDSRSLVR; does it connect with the F28379D Launchpad? I see other C2000 MCU's listed as compatible, but not the Launchpad, so I just want to verify. In addition, will I need a controlCARD with this to make this work if it is connected with the F28379D?

Michael, no, the TMDSRSLVR does not connect with any LaunchPad. The controlCARD DIM100 interface is also for our older generation devices so it cannot support the F28379D controlCARD which is based on HSEC180 standard.

You may want to look at https://www.ti.com/tool/TIDA-01527 instead. Although the HW is not available for purchase, the full design is available if you want to build your own HW. There will be some software porting required to run the SW on the F28379D device.

Looking at the TIDA-01527, this may work, although a purchasable product is preferred for long term for what I am doing. Ideally whatever setup we use is easily reproduceable, so a product we can purchase is easier to do so. Is it possible to connect the TMDSRSLVR with a LaunchPad via GPIO connections? Mathworks seems to have an example suggesting this, linked here: https://www.mathworks.com/help/mcb/gs/hardware-connections.html#mw_8a869325-5b0d-4631-afd5-05a23622cc5c (at the bottom of the page, connected with a different LaunchPad, not the F28379D). Even if it would need a controlCARD to work, is this possible?

Michael,

If you just want to build a quick prototype, you can connect the TMDSRSLVR board with jump wire to a launchpad, as suggested by Mathworks.

There is a complete salutation for HV motor drive and resolver interface: DesignDRIVE Development Kit (IDDK). This design integrates the TMDSRSLVR in the design, and works with F28379D controlCARD.

Thank you so much! Just to verify, when connecting the LaunchPad to the TMDSRSLVR, I do not need a controlCARD, correct? Just connect them as shown by Mathworks?

You are correct. Do not populate the controlCARD, just follow the connection suggested by Mathworks. If you want to drive excitation signal with DAC on F28379D, you can do so by connecting the GPIO-02 to DAC output on launchpad.

Looking over these suggestions with my team today, and just noticed that the TMDSRSLVR is no longer manufactured. Can you recommend any off-the-shelf products that can connect with the F28379D Launchpad to connect resolver data? We already have the Launchpad integrated into our setup, which is why connecting with it and not a different control card is vital.

Would I be able to connect the Launchpad to the TMDXIDDK379D (the development kit you recommended) in a similar manner that I would be able to the TMDSRSLVR?

Hi Michael,

It will be possible to bridge the IDDK resolver circuit into a launch pad by wire, but this kit will be an overkill for you if you only need the analog frontend for the resolver. You can check if you can still find the IDDK kit on the market. Otherwise, you may just get the TIDA-01527 design files and build your own board. Thanks.
