TMS320F28379D: SCI serial communication over USB to PC

Part Number: TMS320F28379D

Hi,

I am trying the SCI echoback example on the 28379D control card.  The example works well when I connect to GPIO28,29 using Putty terminal and configuring the COMM to the XDS serial port to which the debugger is connected. I tried to use a separate USB to serial DB9 adapter however that seems to be loading garbage data to the terminal window. I tried two things:

1) Tried connecting to the pins GPIO28 29 on the experimenters kit pinout through the DB9 connector and configuring the COMM to the new Comm port

2) Tried changing the serial comm channel to sci-b and changed the pinouts and connected through the DB9 connector again.  This was also downloading the same garbage data.

Is it not possible to connect to the board through a separate USB to serial adapter? or is any additional configuration needed?

Thanks a lot,

Aditya

  • Hi Aditya,

    2) Tried changing the serial comm channel to sci-b and changed the pinouts and connected through the DB9 connector again.  This was also downloading the same garbage data.

Have you confirmed that there is data on the tx pin being transmitted? Are you able to place a scope on your tx pin and monitor the output? If you are seeing data then there is something wrong with the connections you have afterwards, which I may not be able to assist with since that is related to your application/hardware.

  • Hi Marlyn,

Thanks for the suggestion. This helped a lot with the debug. I set the DSP to transmit only ( as opposed to the transmit and receive in the example) and now I can see that the GPIO tx is sending out data that I can see on the oscilloscope. My guess is that the usb to 232 adapter that I am using is not able to process the data properly.  Is there a recommended USB to serial adapter that works as the adapter that I have might have predefined settings that might be causing the problems.

    Thank you,

    Aditya

  • Hi Aditya,

Is there a recommended USB to serial adapter that works as the adapter that I have might have predefined settings that might be causing the problems.

I am glad the debug was useful. Unfortunately, we do not have a USB to serial adapter that we are able to recommend.
