fctv() usage

I need to be able to convert a float32 into an ascci string.  To do this I was planning on using fctv(), unfortunately the same code I have used elsewhere will not compile for the C2000.

   float32 val;

   int decpt, sign;

   char *string;

   int n_decimal_digits = 6;

   val = -1.234;

   string = fcvt(val,n_decimal_digits,&decpt,&sign);

Compilation throws this: error: a value of type "int" cannot be assigned to an entity of type "char *"
Any help would be appreciated,
TC
