Thank you for the quick reply.

I was just wondering. The SCI pins on the launchpad output 3V signals, while my USB port takes in 5V. Wouldn't this damage the launchpad? Is there a safe way of doing this interfacing?

It is using onboard XDS100v2 and FTDI chip. It enumerates as Virtual COM port on your laptop, Matlab will communicate on that COM port.

Please take a look at Launchpad schematics in C2000Ware SDK install. I think it uses GPIO42/43 for SCITX/RX

I was wondering, can I still use that if I am using the USB port to write code to my launchpad? 

In my head, the schematic you've shown me is already being used to communicate with the microcontroller. Could I set up something separate to send data to my PC? Would I use - lets say SPIB instead?

If so, what would I need to do that?

Eric,

When you connect the target to USB port, it enumerates two devices:

- TI XDS100V2

- Virtual COM port.

You can use both devices. Serial communication will work while connected to target using xds100v2 emulator.
