To answer both #1 and #3, the C2000 device IOs are spec'd to drive/sink up to 4mA of current which may not be enough to drive LEDs with adequate brightness directly. LED drivers were included on the EVM for this reason.

What is meant by "MCU CLK pin"? Are they meaning X1/X2? The F2838x device does have two 10 MHz internal oscillators for clocking the device, but these have some limitations over an external clock source (oscillator or Crystal), such as accuracy.

Ethercat PHY CLK output pin is only meant for clocking external Ethernet PHY devices with a 25MHz clock source. We actually don't recommend using this feature currently either.

Hi Kevin,

TMS320F28388D IC has Ethercat PHY CLK pin and EVB is optional with BU pin and External oscillator. But this pin selection is not active in any Variant definition.

For what purpose were the LEDs in question 3 used?

They are just software / IO controlled LEDs for visual indication.

I don't understand the question. Are they asking about using the 'ESC_PHY_CLK' signal of the F2838x device to clock the Ethernet PHYs instead of using the 25MHz Oscillator + Clock buffer?

The DP83822 is an EtherNET PHY device and yes it can be used for EtherCAT comms (which is an Ethernet-based fieldbus system).

Also, can we split it into different branches using a network switcher in the Ethercat architecture? Like the Ethernet Switch used in Ethernet.

There is the DP83640T-EVK board. I don't believe there's a reference specifically for EtherCAT.

EtherCAT devices are typically daisy-chained to create a line topology (See training series here for details on technology). If you want to create other typologies, like a star, you can look at products like the below. I don't know the specifics that go into this kind of junction.
