TMS320F28388D: Error with new CCS project using syn.cfg

Step 1: I opened a new CCS project.

Step 2. Added new file from file=>new=>other=>general=>file=>next=>file name=>finish=>enable sysconfig=>yes. An error popped up "missing argument: --board or -- device must be specified".

Step 3. I pressed "go back" and filled the device parameters, selected start.

Step 4. Added ePWM modules 1- 10 and pressed save. An error popped up "the last change caused an exception"

Step 5. I pressed go back. Saved but the error didn't pop up again. I closed CCS.

Step 6. I relaunched CCS again to open the project and the error in step 2 reappeared. I pressed go back, added the device again and pressed start. The ePWM modules I added in step 4 are no longer there. Please note that there is an untitled.syscfg at the RHS.

Step 7. Please note that I want a new CCS project not an example from C2000wares.

Hi Olutayo,

Thanks for the detailed walkthrough of the issue, this will help with debug if the following still fails. One thing I would like to try is loading the "empty_projects" example into your CCS. That is very similar to what you're wanting to do (a blank example without anything configured).

Could you try the empty project located at the following:

{**c2000ware-release**}\driverlib\f2838x\examples\c28x\empty_projects\empty_driverlib_main.c

Let me know if that suffices for your needs. If not, then we can debug the issue above (which is likely the.syscfg file properties conflicting with the project properties).

Thank you for your advice.

The empty project example worked for the .syscfg. However, I could not switch to TMS320F28377S. There exists an a switch option for f28377s. This was not recognised in the switching process.

I tried to search for an empty project example for TMS320F28377S but I could not find. Please advise.

Hi Olutayo,

Can you show the error that occurs when you switch? I cannot replicate in current Sysconfig, the only errors that occur are related to certain items being unavailable on F2837x (device compatibility).

Step 1. Switch from F28388D to F28377S.

Step 2. An error popped up "An attempt was made here to change settings that do not exist. This is most likely due to a difference in the board or device. Click hereto acknowledge and dismiss this error." I corrected this.

Step 3. Saving the settings, an error popped up " f28377s is unrecognised - migration operation aborted!

4. Press OK to return. Looks normal but see what happens in step 5.

Step 5. Close CCS and re-open the project. The migration settings disappeared.

Hi,

This is likely caused by an out-of-date CCS (or less likely, C2000Ware) version. Newer CCS versions have support for f28377s.

Can you verify you are on the latest CCS version?

You can see existing CCS install by going to "Help"->"About"

Hi Olutayo,

This is likely a Sysconfig upgrade issue, can you check which Sysconfig you have installed? You can click the "ABOUT" button at the top of Sysconfig to find your version.

Hello Vince,

I do not use standalone SysConfig but the one embedded in CCS. So I presume since I have the latest CCS, then my syscfg should be up-to-date. There is no "about" menu for the syscfg feature in CCS.

Hi Olutayo,

Thanks for the correction, you can get the Sysconfig version by going to Window->Preferences Then navigating under "Code Composer Studio" for "Products":

I have replicated this issue on Sysconfig 1.13 and am following up with software experts to determine what version has this fixed.

This is a real issue though, so thank you for catching this, we will work to resolve this from our side. For some background, this is related to the device XML files in CCS under the "ccs1200\ccs\ccs_base\common\targetdb\devices" path.

I remember the first time you try to save a SYSCFG file in an empty project it used to give this error but I believe the CCS team fixed this issue.

Darian Sale does the issue still persist when you have a CCS project and you start from an empty SysConfig file and go through the start page in CCS, it wont save the settings?

Darian Sale I just tried this on CCS12.1 and it doesn't save.

Steps:

1. Create new CCS project

2. Add a new syscfg file

3. Enable the sysconfig tool from the dialog box

4. Launch the syscfg - causes an error saying no board or device - this is okay and acceptable

5. you are taken to the front page

6. Pick a SW product, device

7. Add a module in sysconfig.

8. Click save, the file doesnt actually save.

So when you reopen you are at step 4 again.

Can we fix this?

To get around the issue, please when you are at step 8, instead of trusting the save button which is not working, copy the content in the GUI syscfg file as shown below:

Copy that content and PASTE it manually in the .syscfg file in your system and save it.

Then from that point on, everything will work.

It just that VERY INITIAL SAVE button that doesnt work.

However, this is not clear because when you double click 1, then 2 will pop up. Where then do you suggest we paste the content of 3 because there is no space to paste anything in 2?

Again, even if this method works, it is still necessary that TI makes an empty project having .syscfg file available for F28377SPTPT just as other devices have.

Hi Olutayo,

As Vince mentioned , there is an issue with device XML files in CCS and under the "ccs1200\ccs\ccs_base\common\targetdb\devices" path which is causing the switch operation to fail.

We will provide an empty project having .syscfg file available for F2837xs in the next release of C2000Ware.

Olutayo,

The next release of C2000Ware is planned for Feb 2023 .

In the meantime, you can try using the attached project.

You will have to extract and place in the <C2000WareInstallDir>\driverlib\f2837xs\examples\cpu1 folder.
