TMS320F28386D: RST8 NMIWD Reset Functionality

Functional Safety Manual for TMS320F2838x Real-Time Microcontrollers provide the below SM.

One question:  What is the difference between it with normal watchdog?

Another question: If the normail watchdog is already implemented, does still need to implement this NMIWD?

  • What you refer to as the “normal” watchdog is the one that is present in every C2000 device, right from the very first device. This is a free-running counter that needs to be periodically reset before it overflows. If it overflows, the device can either be reset or an interrupt asserted.

The NMIWD is another WD that can be activated based on different types of errors that occur in the system. It has its own counter, which can reset the system (or generate an interrupt) when it overflows.

Another question: If the normail watchdog is already implemented, does still need to implement this NMIWD?

This completely depends on the system requirements.
