TMS320F28379D: CCS920 cannot be started

Part Number: TMS320F28379D

Hallo,
I have got a new notebook and I have to install the CCS920 on this machine. The installation works but after the first successful start of CCS920 it cannot be started again.

If you try to start CCS920 the following message is shown:

How can I fix this problem.

Best regards

Ralf

  • Hello Ralf,

Please note that 9.2.0 is very old and unsupported. I assume there is some specific requirement where you need to use this old version. That said, please provide the eclipse error log located at <WORKSPACE FOLDER>/.metadata/.log

    Thanks

    ki

  • Dear Ki,

thanks for your answer. Yes, the CCS version is old, but I don´t want to change it during a running project.

Attached you will find the three workspace metadata folders. Unfortunately I don´t know which folder is the current one because the error window is shown before the eclipse launcher starts.

I use the CCS9.2.0 version with those three workspaces on another notebook (same hardware) and it works without any problem.

In this context a have another question. Is it possible to install different versions of CCS on the same computer?

     Best regards

    Ralf

  • Attached you will find the three workspace metadata folders. Unfortunately I don´t know which folder is the current one because the error window is shown before the eclipse launcher starts.

Does the launcher crash after the dialog where you can specify the workspace location? Can you delete all your workspaces and then reproduce the issue and provide that metadata?

In this context a have another question. Is it possible to install different versions of CCS on the same computer?

Yes. You can even have multiple versions of the same install (as long as they are in separate install directories and using separate workspace folders.

  • Dear Ki,
I have deleted all three workspace folders, but the problem is the same. After clicking the start button of CCS920 you can see the CCS logo for a short time and then the error window is shown (see video). The eclipse launcher windows is not reached. No new workspace folders are created, so I cannot send you the metadata.

  • No new workspace folders are created, so I cannot send you the metadata.

Where did you get those other workspace folders that you provided to me earlier? Were they from another machine?

Can you try a new clean reinstall of 9.2.0? (make sure you install in a new empty folder)

If that does not help, can you try the current CCS version 12.3.0?

    Thanks

    ki

  • Dear Ki,

yes, the workspaces I have sent to you were from the other machine. This machine (identical hardware to the current machine) is three month old and the installations of CCS920 was possible without any problem.

Now I have cleared the CCS920 installation completely (deleting all folders …) and have installed the current version CCS1230. However, I have the same problem (see screenshot).

I have found the following YouTube video:

    https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=5dgX5qLYSiI

At time 1:35 you can see the same problem. Following the information from the video the reason for the problem is the java software. The java software is part of the basic software installation from our company and is identical on both notebooks (see pic2).

Is it possible that the problem is caused from the java software?

    Best regards

    Ralf

  • Is it possible that the problem is caused from the java software?

CCS comes with its own JRE and should use that by default to avoid any conflicts.

With what permissions did you install CCS? And with what permissions are you running CCS?

  • Dear Ki,
I think we are now on the right way.

I´m not sure what do you mean with “permissions”. On the new machine (this one with the problem) I have up to now admin right. For installation of CCS I have only clicked on the ccs_setup.exe file, unfortunately I don´t know which rights I had during installation.

On the three month old machine (this one who CCS works) I am only a standard user, because after the installation phase the rights are automatically reduced from our IT department.

If I start CCS on the new machine as an admin (see pic3) it seems to be working! After that the eclipse launcher starts.

Do you think I have to reinstall CCS with "special rights" on the new machine?

    Best regards

    Ralf

  • I´m not sure what do you mean with “permissions”.

Yes you are correct. I meant if you installed as admin or user, etc.

I assume you used the same account to install and run CCS. Prior to getting admin rights, what kind of permissions did your account have with the PC? I believe there can be issues if you install as an admin but try to run as basic user. But you should be able to install as a user and run as a user.

  • Dear Ki,
yes I have installed and run CCS with the same account.

In general we have admin rights when the notebooks are shipped to us and on the new machine I have still these admin rights. I don´t think the rights were changed during the installation phase.

Is it possible to install CCS as a standard user? How could I do that?

  • I'm still trying to figure out what the various dependencies are regarding permissions. I came across this article:

    https://software-dl.ti.com/ccs/esd/documents/application_notes/appnote-configuring_ccs_for_multiuser.html

This part for Windows are interesting:

The default category of regular users in Windows 10 is an Authenticated User, which allows Modify/Write permissions to CCS install directory.

If the policy requires to set the category to Users, the directory permissions will have to allow Read/Execute permissions to the CCS install directory.

  • Dear KI,
I think we have a problem with the basic operation system installation which comes from our IT department. I have compared the rights of the folder c:\ti between the new notebook (DE230399) and the three month old one (DE230142). You can see details in the attachment.

I have contacted our IT department regarding the problem. As soon as I have new information I will report.

  • Thank for the update and please keep me posted on your progress.

  • Dear Ki,
the problem is solved. The number of the new machine (DE230399) was assigned twice in the internal network of our company! This results in several serious problems, one of them was the assignment of the permissions. Our IT department has now fixed the problem and everything works properly.

Thank you very much for support.

  • Thank you for the update, this is very helpful in case others run into the same solution!
