I'm not 100% sure, but maybe the series resistor is used here to compensate for the effects of the capacitive load. www.ti.com/.../4080320453001 is a nice video in the TI Precision Labs series about this.

That is correct, thank you for sharing this helpful video. Remember that for a capacitor:
i = C(dv/dt) , so there are big current spikes to a capacitor when there is an insufficient current limiting resistor. This leads to the behavior shown in the video.
