TMDSECATCNCD379D: Device not found under compatible devices (realtime) but demo only

The device was not listed under 'compatible devices', but under 'incompatible devices'. 

I wonder- do I need to use an ethernet crossover cable or a specific one?

I managed to connect the device as a real-time device. The problem seemed to come from the ethernet to usb adapter.

However, I am now facing other issues. I don't seem to be able to write the PDI to EEPROM. I attached some snapshots. 

Some key notes: 

- RUN LED on ethercat board is off;

- State on TwinCAT software: INIT_ERR (and a bunch of errors)

- E2PROM --> Smart view - it doesn't let me write the PDI file and I can see that the two cells (byte and PDI type) are greyed out, unlike the figures shown on the TI example.

Are you still trying to use the ethernet to USB adapter? 

Also, are you running in 'free run' or the active real time mode?

I'm directly connected via ethernet port now, without USB adapter.

TcSwitchRuntime is active - I guess that's the way to run in real time. Or is there another way to check? 

I'm not sure if there is a way to check if you are in free run mode, but you should have an option to choose free run mode when you scan for devices or scan for boxes.

Actually Gaetano, there is a small box at the top of the screen in TwinCAT that allows you to toggle free run mode on or off. 

I tried to toggle, then power cycled and re-run. Unfortunately the result is the same. I get a lot of errors and the device doesn't change its state from INIT to OP. 

I'm wondering whether this board may be faulty or not. Would it be possible to receive another one?

Unfortunately we cannot do returns on EVMs. Could you show me what you see when you scan for devices and scan for boxes? 

Also, have you considered using the F2838xD device for your project? I would be curious if the cost of the ET1100 is more than the price difference between F2838xD and F2837xD.

Those 2 boards are not a good fit for our project. 

This is what I see when I scan for devices:

I would like to request an EVM replacement as there may be a chance that the board is defective. I tried it with different laptops and computers and the result is the same. I just followed the guide provided on the documentation section on the website and the results on my end do not reflect what's on the document. If you want, we can set up a meeting and I can show you live. Would this be an option for you?

Could you please do the below tasks so I can confirm that your board is defective? 

1. Could you please show me what you see when you scan for devices, then scan for boxes? Please expand all of the device tabs. 

2. Could you please provide a cleaner screenshot of the errors that you are seeing?

I did not download ESC tool. I'm not aware of it as on the TI document it doesn't specify it. Did you attempt to follow the example that's on the technical documentation of the TMDSECATCNCD379D?

I apologize, I meant SSC tool. Version 5.11 is needed, and I only see 5.12 and 5.13 on the Beckhoff website for download, so I reached out to Beckhoff support. Were you able to download version 5.11 from Beckhoff's website? 

No, I did not download it. I'll try. Do you need that to do at least the basic steps like scan for boxes and establish a communication? 

I'm not sure if it's needed to scan for boxes, but it is needed to compile software for the C2000 device that will let you establish communication. 

Ok, try to run the setup installation file that you can find under C:\ti\controlSUITE\development_kits\TMDSECATCND379D_V1.0.

Once you run it, it will install a folder SSCToolC28xPatch

It explains that you need to install the SSC tool first, then you need to install the patch (pages 8-9). This is where the problem arises, since you need v5.11, which I cannot find on the Beckhoff website. I have reached out to their support@beckhoff.com email asking for help finding version 5.11.

I'm not able to download the tool as I don't have a membership yet. I just requested it. I have some questions though: did you try if v5.13 compatible? Prior to reaching the point of needing the ESC tool (when writing the E2PROM), I believe we should be able to establish communication without any errors (i.e. the board should not be in INIT state and the RUN LED should be on). Do you get some errors?

I haven't tried v5.13 with the F28379D since I knew it needs v5.11 to work. In the past, I tried to use 5.13 with the F28388D device (needs v5.12), and I couldn't get it to work. I forgot exactly which step I was stuck at.

At least for the F28388D board, I am unable to change the board's state without programming the EEPROM.

I am thinking that this was probably the cause of your issue, but we will not be able to confirm that until we are able to use SSC v5.11.

I assume that you received the same response that I did from Beckhoff support. They expect that SSC v5.12 or v5.13 will work with this board. I probably won't have any time to test this until Monday, so I would be curious about your results if you are able to check this on your side.

Log in to the EtherCAT website or TI?I I've sent out the registration. Hopefully I will be granted access soon.

You need to log in to the Beckhoff EtherCAT website to download the ECSSC tool, I am not able to distribute it.

I was also getting errors where I could not switch the mode to anything other than 'INIT'. I wonder if I will see anything different with v5.11, so I will try reaching out to Beckhoff again to see if there is any way that they can give access to v5.11.
