TMS320F28388D: Which RTOS?

Part Number: TMS320F28388D

Hello,

I need to develop a software on 28388D with RTOS (must). I haven't used RTOS before.

I'll need to use PWM, GPIO, ADC, DMA, SPI, Ethernet MII (TCP/IP and UDP together), RS-422.

Data transfer with JSON, maybe with FTP, trigonometric mathematical calculations, etc.

Which RTOS can I use that is compatible with 28388D? What do you recommend?

  • We primarily recommend FreeRTOS for F2838x devices. You can find it in C2000Ware in the kernel directory.

    Whitney

  • Thank you.

    There are a couple of questions I would like to go into a little bit more detail;

    I'll use  PWM, GPIO, ADC, DMA, SPI,  EMIF (32-bit, 64MB SDRAM), RS-422 and Ethernet MII.

    Every 20 microseconds I'll need to generate a new PWM value according to trigonometric calculations, PID calculations and drive the switches.

    Ethernet will be active all the time, sending and receiving.

    I'll read 5 different temperature data via ADC and communicate with 4 different sensors via SPI.

    I'll use GPIO pins for fault monitoring.

    I'll synchronize time with NTP.

    I'll install an FTP server on the MCU. The remote PC will connect to the FTP and download the data in JSON format.

    Instead of doing all this on a single CPU with FreeRTOS installed;

    For example:

    CPU1: Trigonometric calculations, PID and other calculations etc. with State Machine,

    CPU2: All communications, ADC, time synchronization etc. with FreeRTOS.

    Do you have any suggestions on this? Is it difficult to use State Machine and FreeRTOS separately? Is there a problem with data exchange between CPUs or anything else?

  • This is a fairly common use case, so it shouldn't be difficult. IPC can be used for messaging between C28x cores as well as between C28x core and CM.

    Thanks,

    Arnav
