MOTORWARE: Linear Brushless Motor Identification with Lab 2c

Part Number: MOTORWARE
Other Parts Discussed in Thread: LAUNCHXL-F28069M,

Hello,

I want to start a project of building linear BLDC motor using BoostXL-DRV8323 and LaunchXL-F28069M  to be finally(hopefully) used in a pick and place machine.

I will use magnetic linear tape and magnetic linear encoder with 25 micron resolution connected at QEP pins (A,B and I) as position feedback.

40 magnets 20x10mm will be positioned along 500mm ALU V-slot.

I have previous experience with Motorware Instaspin labs.

I want to ask for help regarding the motor ID phase as the 3 coils block can travel max 50cm while normal bldc motor will spin for couple minutes during ID.

Thank you,

Sergiu

  • Hi Sergiu,

We have some decimation on the motor ID process in chapter 6 Motor Identification and State Diagrams in the guide below.

    https://www.ti.com/lit/spruhj1

Have you reviewed this already and do you have any specific questions on the material?

    Best,

    Kevin

  • Hello Kevin,

Thank you for taking your time to answer  my questions.

As far as I could see in chapter six, fig 6-5, after Rs calculation is completed, motor will ramp up.

In the case of my linear motor, the rotor will move 500mm only then will reach the end stop so phisically cannot ramp up.

I was wondering if it is other way to calculate Ls and flux(V/Hz) with finite movement of rotor or rotor at stand still.

I could not find the reference to decimation on the motor ID process.

    Thank you,

    Sergiu

  • Sergiu,

Referring to section 6.10.1.5 Troubleshooting Motor Shaft Stopping During Ramp-Up of the InstaSPIN User's Guide, the guide states that "The motor shaft needs to start moving at all times during the ramp-up process." Later in 6.10.1.8, the guide further states that "it is important that the motor is spinning during the entire inductance identification process."

Unfortunately, this means that to my knowledge, the motor identification process used by InstaSPIN-FOC FAST cannot be used on a motor which cannot spin freely the entire time.
