Your understanding is correct. The PHY will be different, but the connections between the PHY and the MCU will be similar. Please allow me to loop someone in from our PHY team to expand on this.

So in case of using a different PHY, I really like to know what will be the changes at the hardware and firmware level? for instance a firmware written to work with 2 pairs cable EtherNet PHY can be reused for single-pair Ethernet PHY? -- if not what has to change in principle?
