How is the back EMF aligned with q-axis in SMOPOS?

In the SMO module description document smopos.pdf, there is a figure 4, the back EMF vector e_sis aligned with q-axis, what's the theory behind it?

How to derive the alignment from the equivalent circuit equation below? Please advise.

v_s = Ri_s+ Ldi_s/dt + e_s

I believe he is referring to the Sliding Mode Observer. I will move this to the C2000 forum
