BOOSTXL-BUCKCONV: Load switching frequency & power dissipation

Part Number: BOOSTXL-BUCKCONV

Tool/software:

Hi,

Is there a frequency limit to the switching frequency of the load Q1 + PR2 ? In other therms, is the load switching meant only for load transients (low frequency switching of Q1), or can I go for an average load (high frequency switching of Q1, possibly higher than the converter switching frequency, or at least the same order of magnitude) ? Can I set an arbitrary load by switching Q1 at high frequency and controlling it's duty cycle ?

Also, is there a maximum output voltage / load dissipation for PR1 and PR2 ? Or is it possible to go up to 100% duty cycle on the buck in steady state ?

Thanks in advance,

Best regards,

Adrien

  • Adrian,

Frequency limit to the switching frequency of the load Q1 + PR2 is mainly limited by Q1's operating frequency and its driver. Please check its datasheet, turn-on time is 10ns and turn off time is 13nf and for driver is 15ns. Limit from C2000 side is defined by ePWM time base clock and how fine you want to adjust the duty.

Yes, load can be adjusted using duty cycle and you can go more than switching frequency.

It can safely load by 3A steady state. Higher load can be achieved if there is additional heartsink or fan is used for cooling.
