[concerto] F28M35H52 controlCARD

I am a new comer to concerto MCU F28M35x, and start to have an evaluation on it.

I have some questions about the controlCARD.

  • Can a single concerto controlCARD work standalone without a docking station,  supposed an external 5V power supply is applied to some pins of controlCARD?
  • Without docking station, can I perform full functional JTAG emulation or online single step debugging with ISO USB JTAG connection to USB port in PC?

            In my understanding, XDS100 emulator is already integrated into controlCARD.  So emulation can fullyfunction without a docking station.

  • Docking station just provides 5V power supply to controlCARD and gains access to all controlCARD signals.  Am I right?

It seems there is no document for detail card operation in controlSUITE.

    The F28M35x controlCARD is, by default, designed to work with a docking station or other motherboard.  As you mention, it's main tasks are to provide access to all F28M35x signals, give power to the F28M35x device, and give power to one side of the isolation chips.

    However, it is possible to use the F28M35x cCARD standalone and you'll be able to debug the device.  To do this, you'll need solder a wire from TP4 to TP8 and TP20 to TP19.  This will allow the USB to power the M35x side of the isolation boundary.  Once this is done, if you want to connect the card into a cCARD socket, you should NOT expect the JTAG communication to be isolated.

    Now with the wire jumping, both halves are powered up and LD1 and LD4 are ON.

    Is it possible to connect the F28M35x conrolCARD to an external battery to work in standalone mode?
    If so, what is the needed voltage?
    What PINs should I connect to?

    It is possible.  Most likely you would want to tie into the 5V rail on the cCARD. 

    However, I will note that the F28M35x has reasonably high power consumption.  As a result, I would expect that you'll need to change the batteries semi-often.

    Take a look at the schematics in controlSUITE to see where to connect to:

    When you say 5V rail, do you mean PIN no. 1 on J11?

    +5V would go to TP8
    GND would go to TP19

    I've been able to get my H52C1 Concerto controlCard running without a baseboard by jumpering TP4-TP8 and TP19-TP20 as you suggested - thanks very much!.  I'm able to load and debug code using the USB emulator interface, which is great.

    I have a Peripheral Explorer baseboard, and I have not been able to get the emulator to talk to the controlCard using the Explorer.  So I have a couple of questions...

    1)  I would prefer not to defeat the isolation by jumpering the test points as described above.  How do I need to configure the controlCard and Explorer baseboard so that I can run the emulator while powering the controlCard via the Explorer baseboard?

    2)  What is the best way to figure out what Explorer peripherals I can run using the H52C1 controlCard?

    1) I would recommend un-jumpering TP4-TP8 and TP19-TP20.  After you do this, the H52C1 controlCARD should get powered by the baseboard and the emulation path will be through the USB-connector and the xds100v2 that exists on the controlCARD.  (the reason you needed to jumper across the test points was to get power to the Concerto device, the Peripheral Explorer baseboard will now provide this power).

    2) You'll need to look at the schematics of the Peripheral Explorer and the Concerto controlCARD. I've attached the following excel file which should give you idea of what peripheral is expected to be on a particular GPIO by the Peripheral Explorer baseboard.
