LAUNCHXL-F28P55X: Fail to connect to target using CCS 20 (Theia based)

Part Number: LAUNCHXL-F28P55X
Other Parts Discussed in Thread: CCSTUDIO, C2000WARE

Tool/software:

I'm trying to run the example adc_ex10_multiple_soc_epwm (RAM CPU1) connected to the F28P55 Launchpad. The target configuration file that comes along with the example is for F28P65. I created a new target config file and it passes the "test connection" procedure. The board however fails to connect in debug. Tried running the debug session with image and also project-less. I get the following error:

IcePick_C_0: Error connecting to the target: (Error -2131 @ 0x0) Unable to access device register. Reset the device, and retry the operation. If error persists, confirm configuration, power-cycle the board, and/or try more reliable JTAG settings (e.g. lower TCLK). (Emulation package 20.0.0.3264)

I have reset the entire system multiple times.

The firmware went through an update of the XDS110 the first time I connected.

Serial COM ports look normal at Device Manager.

Do you have any ideas on how to debug this issue?

Thanks!

  • As an additional piece of information, the board connects fine when running though CCS 12.8.0.00012.

  • Hi Lenio,

Can you confirm what version of the C2000 Device Support Files you have installed in your CCS Theia install.

I am able to reproduce this issue on my end. I am forwarding this post to the CCS team and device support folks.

    Regards,

    Ozino

  • Please note attempts to update to the latest device support files fail as I'm unable to select the check boxes when attempting to perform an update.

  • I have the same issue and can't update the files.
  • Here is what I see.

    CCSv12.8.1

I import the acd_ex10_multiple_soc_epwm project for the P55X LaunchPad

The target configuration is for the P55x and not the P65x.

Here is the project in my workspace.

This project includes 2 target configuration files which can be a problem.  I set the LaunchPad one to be Active and Default.

Here is the content of the target config to confirm that it is for P55x

    Test connection passes.

    Launching a debug session worked.

    CCSv20.0.0

Imported the project into my workspace:

Set the LaunchPad configuration to be active:

Confirm that it is for a P55x (I did not change anything)

    Launched the debugger:

So I am a bit confused. In the original post it mentioned that the project was set for P65x. That is not the case for me.  That makes me think that the P65x project was selected by mistake.

If I import the same example for the P65x LaunchPad and then change the target configuration to TMS320F28P550SJ9 then Test connection won't pass.  It fails the scan chain verification if you scroll to the bottom.

If I look at the settings for the XDS110 they are different.  The P65x configuration has it set to JTAG mode and the P55x configuration is cJTAG.

This is what P55x LaunchPad requires.

So to avoid the issue.  1) Try P55x LaunchPad example.  I am using C2000Ware 5.04 which is what the project wizard in CCS should be using. I can't reproduce the issue where it is set for P65x.  2) if when you import a P55x example and it has a target config for P65x when you change the target config from P65x to P55x you will need to change the settings associated with the XDS110.

    John

  • John,

thank you for such detailed answer. The only step I was missing was to set the LP as the active target configuration file. Everything works now.

  • Hi John, thanks for the information.

Do you have an update on the inability to update tools in CCS theia. See previous screenshots from Lenio and myself. I am unable to select the check box to start updates.

  • Ozino,

Installing updates should work. There is an issue with the ability to select/unselect which ones you want to install.

I just installed the updates on my end.

    Regards,

    John

  • Is there a workaround for the issue to select the products for install? I'm still unable to select them on my end.

  • There are only 2 updates available and they are selected by default. C29 and SP-MCU.

Just click install.  Note that if you set the TI proxy in your settings within CCS you will need to clear that for the update install to proceed.

    John

  • These are my proxy settings and the update is not running. Suggestions?

  • Lenio,

Do you see the dialog like in my last post?  Is the Install button active?  Any sort of error message when you click it?

    Regards,

    John

  • The install button is active, but the options above were grayed out. Clicking on the install button, the window disappears, but nothing really gets installed. When the process is repeated, the same update is still pending. However, when collecting screen shots to post them here today, the update did get installed this time. It's hard to understand, as the behavior has changed since the last time I opened CCS. Everything is inexplicably okay now.

  • The greyed out checkbox is a bug that will get fixed.

I was seeing something similar to you early yesterday.  I was trying to figure out if a setting was causing it and it started working.  I know there was a issue on the server that was resolved.  Maybe playing around with the settings caused something to refresh?
