TMS320F28P650DH: EtherCAT support question

Part Number: TMS320F28P650DH

Tool/software:

Hi Champs,

Could you help to check below questions? Thanks!

1. I have checked other E2E threads, F28P65 does not support Ethernet over EtherCAT (EoE), is it correct?

2. Can IP messages (EtherType 0x0800 and 0x86DD) and EtherCAT messages (EtherType 0x88A4) be transmitted in the same EtherCAT network?

3. If F28P65 EtherCAT does not support the EOE function, can it support the topology shown in the figure below?

Best Regards,

Julia

  • Hi Julia,

Ethernet over EtherCAT (EoE) can be done on P65x, but we do not have an example solution. EoE just tunnels standard Ethernet communication via EtherCAT, so you have to be interfacing with another device that supports EtherCAT frames as well. More details documented by Beckhoff below:

    https://infosys.beckhoff.com/english.php?content=../content/1033/tc3_io_intro/1446581387.html&id=

    2. Can IP messages (EtherType 0x0800 and 0x86DD) and EtherCAT messages (EtherType 0x88A4) be transmitted in the same EtherCAT network?

I'm not 100% certain, but I think all frames will be of EtherCAT messages (EtherType 0x88A4) in an EtherCAT network. Beckhoff / ETG can answer this more definitively.

    3. If F28P65 EtherCAT does not support the EOE function, can it support the topology shown in the figure below?

I think this should be possible if EMS / Switchport can handle Ethernet / EtherCAT routing & translations properly.

    Best,

    Kevin
