Looking to choose a low-end microcontroller of the C2000 Family.

The main job of this microcontroller actually will be read digital and analog input, and put the values on the SPI, get values from SPI and put them to digital output and DAC using I2C, so it is a very easy job

In the future we plan to use this microcontroller also for digital power (half or full bridge, llc or push pull) .

To do this I’ve planned to choose the https://www.ti.com/product/TMS320F280037C in the 64 pin version

The reasons I choose this pn are:

Cost

At least 16 analog channels

CLA

CLB

Canbus

Internal oscillator

Do you think it is a good choice in terms of longevity?

Do you have other PN you think they will fit our needs?

I do think this is a good choice for longevity. TI guidelines for products end of life are here: https://www.ti.com/support-quality/quality-policies-procedures/product-life-cycle.html

While I cannot make a guarantee about the future, we have many MCUs that are 20+ years old and have no active plans for EOL. This MCU is only a few years old, and certainly has a long life ahead of it.

If CLA and CLB are requirements for you, then I believe this is the lowest priced MCU that will fit your requirements.

Hi Bailey,

Most of our digital power reference designs will actually use the control card / daughter card: https://www.ti.com/tool/TMDSCNCD280039C

I think it would be a good decision to look at reference designs for your specific application, and then select the EVM that is used with that reference design.

Many can simply be found through a google search of your end application.

Thanks! Do you have guidance on an IC to add a USB to this product?

We'd like to add USB for connecting the MCU to a pc for application configuration and firmware updates. I've looked into the possibility of another c2000 with integrated USB but there are not many and they are quite expensive.

Hi Bailey,

This MCU does not have hardware support for USB protocol.

There is hardware support for UART. You would need some USB -> UART converter IC like the following:https://ftdichip.com/products/ft232rl/

You could even use something like this: https://www.adafruit.com/product/954

You should have pins for UART communication on your production board so the expensive USB -> UART IC is not needed on every board.
