TMS320F28379D-Q1: Speed sensor interface using Enhanced Quadrature Encoder Pulse (eQEP) Module

Part Number: TMS320F28379D-Q1

Tool/software:

We are currently using the TMS320F28379DPTPQ controller for our propulsion application.
Our speed sensor provides pulses via two signals, A and B, which are 180 degrees phase-shifted. By evaluating the phase difference between these signals, we can determine the wheel rotation direction (forward or reverse).
Apart from these A and B signals, no other outputs are available from the speed sensor (i.e., no separate Index or Strobe signal).

While reviewing the datasheet, we noticed that the Strobe and Index inputs are referenced for position and counting purposes. We would like clarification on the following points:

  1. Is it sufficient to use only EQEPA and EQEPB inputs for measuring speed and position?

  2. Are the Strobe and Index inputs mandatory for our application?

  3. If they are mandatory, from where should we derive these additional signals, considering our speed sensor does not provide them?

From our understanding, since we are mainly focused on speed measurement and relative position tracking, using only the EQEPA and EQEPB signals should be sufficient. The Strobe and Index inputs are typically used for absolute referencing or special latching, and may not be essential for basic speed and direction detection.

Kindly confirm if this understanding is correct, or if any additional setup is required to ensure proper operation of the eQEP module.
