Hello Experts,

I am looking for guidance on generating Debug information in DWARF format for variables from an output file using the C29x Clang compiler. Could someone please advise on the correct method or process to achieve this?

Any help or pointers would be greatly appreciated!

Thanks Ajay for your inputs.,

I do know the flags of choosing what version of Dwarf debug information

But I am looking for a, step-by-step flow for generating DWARF debug information files. I'm also interested in how a well-known DWARF parser can be used in this process. I'm open to the output format of the DWARF information, whether it's text, JSON, or another appropriate format.

I still have some questions. so I'm wondering if you know of any DWARF parsers that TI users generally like or use a lot, especially if they're working with Texas Instruments stuff?

I'm trying to figure out if there's, like, a go-to parser or any that are known to play nice and run smoothly with TI tools.

One more thing, does any one of you has Information on when DWARF version 4, and DWARF version 5 will be supported by the TI C29x CLANG compiler?

If you want to work with DWARF, here are a couple of open source LLVM based tools that are good starting points:

We don't have any plans to support DWARF version 4 or 5 at the moment. Is there any specific feature you're interested in from these newer versions?

I really appriciate your inputs.

I am just assuming DWARF version 4 in TI CLANG compiler and TI C28 compilers as the same, And on C28 compilers, we get debug Information as default DWARF version 4, if I am not mistaken.

Thus I just want to know, If I must update my scripts to work with both DWARF versions, DWARF version 3 and version 4. As I am working on projects with both C28 as well as C29 controllers. And obviously to be able to handle both in parser.

That is correct, provided you use the option --abi=eabi to build with the newer EABI. For the past few years, C2000Ware has only supported EABI. Thus, it is very likely you also use EABI.

It appears you presume Dwarf (any version) is a very strict specification, and for the same input, different compilers must emit output that is nearly the same. That is a bad presumption. It is better to think of the Dwarf specification as similar to a programming language. How many different ways, in C, can you write a sort function? Of course, many different ways. Similarly, Dwarf can represent the same debug information in many different ways. The implementation of the Dwarf generation part of the C29 compiler and the C28 compiler is very different. The first is open source, the second is TI proprietary. While there may be some things that look the same, it is all but certain that yet other things look different. No attempt was made for them to be the same.

It is likely that you can write a single script (or set of scripts) that can handle the Dwarf output of both compilers. But please anticipate that this script will need to handle a wider range of possible input than you currently expect.
