TMS320F28388S: How to connect two MCUs to one Flash

Part Number: TMS320F28377SPTPS

Tool/software:

Dear,

I want to connect 2 MCUs to one external Flash memory.

I will use MCU like TMS320F28377SPTPS.

Please recommend which method would be best and suitable parts

Thanks.

  • Hi,

Do you have any other requirements for the external Flash memory?

Our F28377 device has EMIF for interfacing with external memory. Would both MCUs be this F28377 or would there be a combination.

    Regards,

    Peter

  • Dear,

    Thanks for your answer

    No other special requirements

And I don't understand the difference between SPI and EMIF when accessing Flash.

    The first MCU is TMS320F28377,
The second MCU is not yet decided but it is likely to be TMS320F28377

I want to access one FLASH memory from two MCU as above

(And it's okay if the two mcu's don't necessarily read/write at the same time.

However, I would like to avoid additional components such as MUX if possible.)

    Thanks.

  • Hi,

We typically are not supposed to give recommendations for third-party components. For the external FLASH, if you need to be able to access from multiple MCUs, do you need access to the same memory locations from both MCUs or would you be able to partition the external FLASH into 2 segments?

SPI and EMIF are quite different implementations for communication with external memory, SPI  can be used for things like external SD card and we have example to showcase this. EMIF is more performant and from the code perspective, you are able to treat the external flash and allocate it as if it were onboard flash, the EMIF peripheral will handle all communication in the background when accessing parts of memory from the external flash.
