LAUNCHXL-F28379D: Which gate driver should I use for 6× 15V IGBTs used in 3-phase IM control with SIMULINK

Part Number: LAUNCHXL-F28379D
Other Parts Discussed in Thread: UCC5870QEVM-045, UCC21550, UCC21520, C2000WARE

Tool/software:

Hello

I'm currently working with an IGBT-based inverter bench driving a three-phase induction motor. The six IGBTs require a 15 V gate drive.

I would like to control the motor with the LAUNCHXL-F28379D launchpad, to do some real-time V/f motor control via Simulink and see the speed on my PC.

At this point, I don't know which module/gate driver I should use to interface things properly to do some motor control.
What should I use between the LAUNCHXL-F28379D and the 15 V IGBT gate drivers to do proper motor control?
Are there reference designs or examples?

I saw the following modules which might be interesting for my use case:
- UCC5870QEVM-045 evaluation board with 6 outputs, I don't know if it perfectly fits my needs but it seems like it does (I may be mistaken?)
- use 3× UCC21550 (updated UCC21520), but it would require some tweaking and/or board design before

Thank you for your help and tips

  • Ended up ordering the evaluation board to avoid the costly and time consuming process of making my own power stage, especially since the UCC5870QEVM-045 seems like it will fit my needs.

My concerns are now on the coding side of the implementation: it doesn't seem like it will be an easy task to make everything work with SIMULINK properly, even without the monitoring aspect of my project.
Maybe someone already has some experience regarding that and could explain or show me an useful example? in order to use this evalution board with the launchpad running code from SIMULINK.

    Thank you.

  • Hi Jarem,

I'd recommend referencing Mathworks motor control examples for C2000 devices. They have several example projects for sensorless and sensored motor control that you could adapt to this board. C2000 Blockset is typically required for this.

  • Thank you!
I already took a look to those examples, I review them regularly to slowly understand everything.
I was wondering if anyone had ever tried doing something similar and had other examples, probably self-made, but I know it's really niche.

  • Hi Jarem,

The only similar simulink model TI has is one below found in the C2000 MCSDK. I'll attach some slides I made to describe the project too, but Mathworks own solutions may be a better starting point for you and your device choice.

  • Thank you for your answer!

I took a look to the example given, it looks interesting and close to what I meant, thank you for that!
I am still a beginner on those things, but I took a look at how the system works. I didn't understand everything, but I get the key working principles behind most of the design.
I'll keep the example aside while working on my design, and get inspiration from it.

Currently, there are the main things I need to do chronogically:
    - See how to correctly set and control the ePWM of the launchpad to drive the 6 IGBTs of my inverter
    - Make the control algorithm in pure simulation with SIMULINK. # Even thought I already started working on this, and already have a working simulation, the thing is I make the PWM using the SPWM method and I know that I should SVPWM instead for even better results, and that I don't know how to turn this into something working with the launchpad.
    - From the working simulation, make SIMULINK launchpad + host files fully working with hardware, in the same way shown in the example you provided that works either way.

Thank you for your help, I'll keep trying my best to understand and work up from examples.
