TMS320F28388D: Can we use MCAN as a boot?

Part Number: TMS320F28388D
Other Parts Discussed in Thread: C2000WARE

Hello TI Team,

I am seeking clarification regarding the TMS320F28388's bootloader capabilities, as the Technical Reference Manual lists "CAN A" as a boot source. Given that this device features the MCAN-A peripheral instead of the older eCAN, I need to confirm if this "CAN A" boot mode actually utilizes the MCAN-A peripheral. If it does, I also need to know whether the boot-ROM supports firmware loading via CAN-FD frames or if it is restricted to classic CAN 2.0B frames, and what the default GPIO pins are for this boot mode.

  • Hi Tejaswinee,

For this TMS320F28388 device, the supported CAN is DCAN for this device. CAN-A is the boot source as default (described in C2000Ware ver. 6.00.00 under C2000Ware_6_00_00_00\libraries\boot_rom\f2838x\revA\rom_sources\cpu1\F2838x_ROM\bootROM\source).

Will ask the bootROM expert to confirm on this.

    Thanks and regards,

    Charles

  • Hello,

Apologies for the delay, the thread was incorrectly assigned and got lost for a bit.

I need to confirm if this "CAN A" boot mode actually utilizes the MCAN-A peripheral.

As Charles mentioned, the bootloader uses the DCAN (CAN-A) peripheral. It is restricted to CAN 2.0B. Please refer to 5.7.7.2.5 CAN Boot Mode in the TRM for more details on the bootloading operation.

what the default GPIO pins are for this boot mode.

The default GPIO assignments can be found in Section 5.7.8 GPIO Assignments for CPU1 of the TRM:

    Best,
    Matt
