TMS320F28069M: TMS320F28069M or TMS320F280049C

Part Number: TMS320F28069M
Other Parts Discussed in Thread: MOTORWARE, C2000WARE, , TMS320F280049C

We have an application to control position of rotarory motor and we decide to select TI C2000 series devices. Postion control is supported in InstaSPIN-MOTION for TMS320F28069M within Motorware SDK. However, 28069M is an older generation of C2000 and TI does not include it in the C2000Ware SDK. TMS320F0049C is new generation device but does not support InstaSPIN-MOTION. Can you advice us which device TI recommend us to use by considering device feature, life cycle and support availability?

  • Hi Frank,

So the TMS320F280039Cx does support the InstaSPIN-MOTION. The documentation InstaSPIN-FOC and InstaSPIN-MOTION User's Guide (Rev. I) does not show the device because the TMS320F280039Cx was released many years after the InstaSPIN-MOTION device. In the MotorControl SDK, there are examples of it using the InstaSPIN-FOC in the Universal Motor Control Lab Guide.

  • Hi Reinaldo,

Thank you for your response. Can you answer the following questions?

    1. Does TMS320F280049C support InstaSPIN-MOTION?
    2. As you said, TMS320F280039Cx support InstaSPIN-MOTION and in the MotorControl SDK there are examples of it using the InstaSPIN-FOC, are there any examples of it using InstaSPIN-MOTION in MotorControl SDK?
    3. Comparing TMS320F280039Cx and TMS320F28069M, which one do you prefer for our application of using InstaSPIN-MOTION?

    Thanks,

    Frank

  • Hi Frank,

TMS320F280049C does support InstaSPIN-Motion. Here is a link to find two different examples: F28004x & F28004x

I was searching through the Motor Control and we do not have active example on our Motorcontrol SDK but I believe it is possible to use the universal project to develop this.

The TMS320F280039Cx is preferred device as it is newer device, provides more performance( 2 core running at 120Mhz vs 2 core @ 90Mhz), and has much better cost structure.

    Best Regards,

    Reinaldo Dos Santos

  • Hi Reinaldo,

I guess these questions may need more clarification. InstaSPIN-Motion is not InstaSPIN-FOC, it's more than InstaSPIN-FOC. The link you provided for F28004x is InstaSPIN-FOC, not InstaSPIN-Motion. What we need is position control, which is included in InstaSPIN-Motion but not in InstaSPIN-FOC.

You recommended TMS320F280039Cx and you also mentioned it support InstaSPIN-MOTION, are there any examples of it using InstaSPIN-MOTION?

    Thanks,

    Frank

  • Hi Frank,

I apologize on the mix up here.

For InstaSPIN-Motion, we only support this in our older devices such as the F28069M.

We unfortunately do not have any solutions with InstaSPIN-MOTION for our newer devices and currently there is not plan to support this at the moment.

We do support InstaSPIN-FOC for our newer devices.

    Best regards,

    Reinaldo Dos Santos

  • Reinaldo,

Thank you for your quick response. I understand that TI doesn't provide solutions with InstaSPIN-MOTION for newer devices. The efforts TI will not pursue is in software development or hardware design? I mean, are there any substitute devices which have SpinTAC Move functions in newer generation of C2000 series devices?

If we use older device F28069M, what is the product lifetime of it?

    Thanks,

    Frank

  • Hi Frank,

I am looking for expert on the software and hardware design on the Insta-Motion application to see what the plans are here and they may also be able to comment on the SpinTAC Move functions on our newer devices.

Regarding lifetime, please refer to the following link Product life cycle | Quality policies & procedures | TI.com.

Essentially for product to continue active:

    • The product has had any sales within the last five years (seven years for automotive or high-reliability products).
    • The product can be manufactured and has been in production for less than 10 years.
    • The product has any current customer demand.

  • Hi Frank,

Which specific feature from InstaSPIN Motion are you looking for, and may I ask about the application you plan to use the solution for? We may be able help you with some alternative options in our newer device. Thanks.

    Han

  • Hi Han,

We are looking for the PI and SpinTAC position control. Our application is to control a rotatory motor to move to any position within 360 degree with a fast speed. Thank you for your help.

    Frank

  • Frank,

SpinTAC is only available in on-chip ROM on older F2806xM and F2805xM devices. This was a SW library solution from a company we worked with who was eventually purchased by a major industrial drives company, so we had to stop offering on new chips.

Our servo examples today use standard PI/PID controllers as example.

If you are interested in something llike SpinTAC I believe the MathWorks motor control solutions offer something similar for control loop tuning.

  • Hi Chris,

Thank you for your clarification. As long as TI continue manufacturing F2806xM device and won't plan to obsolete it from your product portfolio, and the legacy MotorWare still work with CCS, it will be ok for us to consider using F2806xM for our application.

    Frank

  • F2806xM, 5xM have no obsolescence plans and MotorWare for these devices are archived and will not have further updates.

I can't confidently comment on if future CCS versions will always support older packages like this though.

  • Thanks very much for your support
