I would like to implement the following safety feature for GPIO:
Safety Feature: GPIO4 – Software Function Test using I/O Loopback.

Could you please confirm whether implementing this mechanism requires any hardware modifications, or if there is an internal configuration available to support this test?

    External loopback, where you route the output GPIO to a totally different input GPIO pin would give you the most coverage, since you can detect open/short faults at the pin of the device. There are internal loopback options but those would not cover the a pin fault such as an open.
