TMS320F28P650SK: TOTALLY PISSED OFF !!!!!!

Part Number: TMS320F28P650SK

Our system is running mac 10.15.7 Catalina using CCS 20.3.0. Your recent bullshit update has now updated CCS to ver 20.4.0.

After the update was installed I ran CCS 20.4.0 and I get a message you cannot run this version you need OS 11.0 or later. WTF !!!!  So I then ran CCS 20.3.0 and I get the same ***.

All the work we have done in ASSEMBLER in CCS 20.3.0 now won't run. Our product is now halted because of your bullshit update.

What are we supposed to do now? redesign our product to use MIPS chips instead of C2000 chips.

So PISSED OFF !!!

Peter

  • HI Peter,

Sorry for the bad experience after the update.

Our system is running mac 10.15.7 Catalina

Please note that is an older version of macOS that is not officially supported by CCS 20.3. macOS 13 (Ventura) is the older version supported:

    https://software-dl.ti.com/ccs/esd/documents/users_guide_ccs_20.3.0/ccs_overview.html#macos

I get a message you cannot run this version you need OS 11.0 or later

This message is misleading also. I'm curious where this message is coming from. If you can provide a screenshot that would be helpful.

Regardless, I would strongly encourage using CCS 20.3 on one of the supported macOS versions. I would actually also encourage using CCS 20.4.0. It has some critical fixes/enhancements.

    Thanks

    ki

  • This message is misleading also. I'm curious where this message is coming from.

Engineering took a look at this and was able to confirm that the message is actually coming for the Theia IDE framework that CCS 20.x is based on. The Theia IDE framework was updated to version 1.64 in CCS 20.4.0 and looks like this version requires at least macOS 11.

If you really wish to use CCS 20.3.0 with Catalina, then you'll need to reinstall it (and ignore/disable updates for 20.4.0).

Again, we do strongly recommend you use one of the officially supported macOS versions, especially since 20.4.0 does have quite a few important fixes.

    Thanks

    ki

  • Just a bit of background on our macOS support strategy.

When we do a major new version of CCS we will officially support the current macOS version and 2 previous versions.  That means we will be testing on those platforms.  For example CCSv20.0.0 officially supports macOS 15 (Sequoia), 14 (Sonoma) and 13 (Ventura).

For subsequent updates (20.x) we will add support for new macOS releases but not drop support. For example CCSv20.4.0 officially supports macOS 26 (Tahoe), 15 (Sequoia), 14 (Sonoma) and 13 (Ventura).  When the next major version of CCS comes out (CCSv21.0.0) mid next year it will drop macOS 13 (Ventura).

CCS might work on older versions but we would not have done any testing on them.  So in your case CCSv20.3.0 was working for you on Catalina.  However as Ki mentioned 20.4 includes an update to the Theia IDE framework that explicitly checks for very old macOS versions and will not run. So unfortunately installing that update is breaking the CCS on your mac.

We should have a stronger warning in our installer when an unsupported version is detected.  In this specific case we should block the update installer from running.

    Regards,

    John

  • Hi Guys, Steve here. Thanks for the info. Peter is the CEO of our company so we'll have to wait and see what he decides. I've never seen him that angry before. He will either continue to development with the c28x chips or move to the MIPS chips. Have a great Christmas and New Year. Steve.

  • Hi Peter and Steve,

My name is Ricky, and I am the Project Manager for Code Composer Studio.

Firstly, I want to personally apologize that our recent CCS v20.4.0 update halted your development; this was not our intention, and we took the situation very seriously, and launched an investigation immediately. Also, thank you for providing an update to the situation, and for reporting the original issue; we wouldn't have know of the issue without your report.

Based on the investigation, we have taken the following action, and suggested the following workarounds:

    • Action #1: We are adding a MacOS version check in our CCS installer, and it will block the update from running on versions less than MacOS v11. This will go live with our next CCS release.
    • Workaround #1: Reinstall CCS v20.3.0 and just ignore the CCS v20.4.0 Core IDE update. This will allow you to continue development on your MacOS v10.15 environment. You should be able to continue with your previous ASSEMBLER work this way.
    • Workaround #2: If possible, update your MacOS environment to v11 or newer. As v10.15 is not officially support by Apple anymore, there are benefits from taking this action beyond CCS usage. That being said, there could be reasons that you need to stay on this version, so totally understandable on my end if that is the case.

In the end, as Steve noted, it is now up to you what your company decides to do going forward. Either way, I am here to listen to any additional feedback, or answer any additional questions if you have any.

Thank you, and have a Happy Holiday!

    Ricky
