TMDSDOCK28379D: Clarification Required on HSEC Connector Pin Mapping for TMDSDOCK28379D

We are currently developing a custom base board for the controlCARD TMDSCNCD28379D.

In the TMDSDOCK28379D docking station, the following HSEC connectors are used to interface with the controlCARD:

  • HSEC8-160-01-L-DV-A-BL for the 120-pin connection

  • HSEC8-130-01-L-DV-A for the 60-pin connection

Upon reviewing the footprint of the HSEC8-160-01-L-DV-A-BL connector, we observed that the pins are physically divided into two sections:

  • Pins 1 to 64 as one part

  • Pins 65 to 120 as another part

However, when pairing with the controlCARD, the connection is possible only such that Pin 1 of the controlCARD mates with Pin 120 of the HSEC8-160-01-L-DV-A-BL connector on the docking station. This reverse pin alignment is not clearly mentioned or explained in the schematic or documentation.

We kindly request your clarification on the following points:

  1. Is this reverse pin mapping (controlCARD Pin 1 ↔ HSEC Pin 120) intentional by design?

  2. Is there any official documentation or application note that explains this pin numbering and mating orientation in detail?

  3. Are there any specific guidelines we should follow while designing a custom base board using these HSEC connectors?

    Could you send me the picture of the board and docking station and schematic that you used as a reference, please? J1 label on bottom left corner of control card refers to pin 1 and docking station has labeled pin 1 and pin 119 on the left side and 2 and 120 on the right side. So, the pinout should be matching.

    In the control card schematics, there are three partitions: pins 1 to 56 in the first partition, pins 57 to 120 in the second partition, and pins 121 to 180 in the third partition. In the docking station schematics, the same partitioning has been followed.

    However, in the BOM of the docking station, for the specified HSEC connector, pins 1 to 64 are shown as the first partition and pins 65 to 120 as the second partition. Pins 121 to 180 are assigned to another HSEC connector, which is acceptable.

    The footprint and pin specification of the HSEC8-160-01-L-DV-A-BL connector do not match the schematics. For reference, I have attached the picture.

    The issue is that the schematic does not match the footprint and pin specifications. In the footprint and symbol, pins 1 to 64 belong to the first partition, and pins 65 to 120 belong to the second partition.

    When this connector pairs with the control card, the connector’s second partition mates with the control card’s first partition, and the connector’s first partition mates with the control card’s second partition. However, this is not highlighted in the schematic.

    It depends on from which side you look at the footprint or the image Samtec provided. I agree it could be clearer but make sure that "shorter" partition is first partition and "longer" is second partition.
