AM6421: Architecture for Servo solution for AM series and DSP series

Part Number: AM6421
Other Parts Discussed in Thread: AM3505

Hi TI,

Now we are assent the DFC for our servo. Currently, the solution were used the AM3505 and two DSP (TMS320F28062PZT for feedback, TMS320F28032PNS for pwm) for the double axises servo drives. Is there any pin to pin replacement for the solution to improve the cost competive? if no, if there is any solution can recommend for evolution? Is it possible to combine the two DSP to one?

I saw one solution like below:

for this solution, is the EtherCAT Phy IP integrated into AM64x? is it possible to evolute our solution to the below one? How much work for FW transplant?

I also sawn another multi-axis solution, which used two DSPs (F2838x and F28004) like below? what are the main differences compared with AM64XX solution?

I saw the solution from your website that single DSP solution? is it just support single axis servo?

I am confused for these solutions, and looking forward to your reply.

Thanks,

  • Hello Wit,

unfortunately there is no pin-compatible solution for your exiting devices.

For dual axis servo drive with EtherCAT there are multiple single chip options:

    1. AM261x - EtherCAT Device using ICSS_M IP, 2 x ARM R5F with 500 MHz, 2nd ICSS_M for encoder protocols, C2000 like motor peripherals (PWM, eQEP, ADC).

    2. TMS320F28P65x - EtherCAT device using Beckhoff IP,  2x C28 DSP with 200 MHz, motor control peripherals, limited absolute encoder support

    3. AM243x -  EtherCAT Device using ICSS_G IP, 1-4 x ARM R5F with 400 MHz, 1 x ARM M4F safety, 2nd ICSS_G for encoder protocols, C2000 like motor peripherals (PWM, eQEP), sigma delta based current sense - no on-chip SAR ADC for motor control.

The market is typically moving to single chip servo with isolation on PWM and SDF modulator.

If you want to go with three chip solution with 2 DSPs we can recommend two TMS320F28001x devices in combination with AM261.

AM243x is more expensive but future proof with gigabit multi-protocol, more flexible encoder protocols and one safe MCU on-chip. It also is pin-compatible with AM64 device which adds Linux capability to the AM243x MCU.

    Selection criteria:

    1. What encoder interfaces do you need to support?

    2. What current sense solution do you plan, SAR ADC or isolated SDF modulator?

    3. Any multi-protocol need for industrial Ethernet or absolute Encoder?

    4. Any technology features such as motion, IoT, web server?

    BR,

      Thomas

  • Dear Thomas,

Thanks a lot. I will study your recommendations.
