TMS320F28377D: VDD decoupling capacitor with BGA package

Hi Team,

I am using TMS320F28377DGWTEP BGA package. It is recommended in the datasheet to place total minimum 20uF capacitor near each pin of VDD for 1.2V supply. There are 14 pins and I have such 14 capacitors with value of 2.2uF. The package I am using is 0402. There is difficultly in placing all 14 capacitors near the pin VDD.

If you have any layout reference to show how to place all capacitors near VDD pin on 1.2V supply please share the same.
Currently I am using all 2.2uF capacitors on VDD, Is there any need of using 0.01uF or 0.1uF high frequency capacitor on VDD pin along with some 2.2uF, 10uF etc.
Can we reduce package to 0201 to accommodate all 2.2uF capacitors near BGA pin?

Hello Namita,

1. You could refer to this app note that explains where to place decoupling capacitors on power pins for C2000 MCUs, Chapter 4.3: https://www.ti.com/lit/an/spracz9a/spracz9a.pdf. Also, you could refer to the F2865x ControlCard design files which uses BGA package: https://www.ti.com/tool/TMDSCNCD28P65X

2. You could place 0.1uF decoupling capacitor on each Vdd pin and then connect them all in parallel with the one 22uF capacitor, instead of placing 2.2uF on each pin. This would help with saving up the cost and PCB area.

3. You can use 0201 footprint if needed just make sure voltage and power ratings are satisfied.
