We are currently working on a Railway application that requires compliance with SIL3/SIL4 safety standards.

In earlier designs, the TM4C1294NCPDTT3R device was used. However, for upcoming projects, there are concerns regarding the long-term availability and lifecycle support of this part, particularly with respect to Railway requirements. A discussion has also been initiated on TI E2E to seek clarity on this topic:

In parallel, we are evaluating alternative device families in case the TM4C1294NCPDTT3R does not meet longevity or SIL3/SIL4 compliance expectations for new designs. As part of this exercise, we are considering the C2000 series.

Could you please advise on the following:

  1. Which C2000 series devices are suitable for Railway applications requiring SIL3/SIL4 compliance?

  2. Which C2000 family would be recommended for new project designs, considering long-term availability and lifecycle support aligned with Railway application needs?

Your guidance on the above will help us in making an informed platform selection for future designs.

    The only device that is SIL3 capable device in c2000 series is F29x device family. Please refer to device datasheet and reference manual available here - https://www.ti.com/product/F29H850TU

    1. What is the official launch date / market introduction timeframe of the F29x device family?

    2. What is the expected product longevity and availability commitment for the F29x device family, particularly with respect to long-life railway applications?

    3. Can the TM4C1294NCPDTT3R device also be considered SIL3 / SIL4 capable when used within an appropriate system-level safety architecture?

    4. What was the original launch date of the TM4C1294NCPDTT3R device?

    5. What is the current lifecycle status and expected remaining longevity of the TM4C1294NCPDTT3R device (e.g., active, sustaining, long-term support outlook)?

    In addition, based on the earlier discussions on this topic (including the TI E2E thread), we would also appreciate guidance on:

    1. Whether TI recommends TM4C1294NCPDTT3R for new SIL3/SIL4 railway designs, or only for sustaining existing deployments.

    2. For SIL3/SIL4 railway applications, does TI provide or plan to provide functional safety collateral (such as safety manuals or FMEDA) for TM4C devices comparable to what is available for F29x?

    3. Are there any long-term supply programs, lifecycle guarantees, or last-time-buy policies applicable to either F29x or TM4C families that customers targeting 15–20 year railway lifecycles should be aware of?

    These details will help us align our platform selection with both functional safety requirements and long-term availability expectations typical of railway applications.

    The F29H85x device will be released into this year. Currently this device is in sampling.

    The TM4C1294NCPDTT3R was introduce back in 2014. I would recommend a newer MCU such as the AM2612 data sheet, product information and support | TI.com. This device was released into the market last year and is also SIL-3 rated.

    For devices not recommended as a primary safety controller, could TI please indicate the intended or recommended role within a SIL-3/4 railway system (e.g., secondary controller, monitoring, non-safety domain)?

    So at a system level, many of our C2000 devices can be SIL-3 capable, they require external circuitry . I am unable to share collateral via this public forum.

    Please reach out to local Sales Team for information.

    It is recommended to use F29H85x, AM261x as these are newer MCUs and have just been released into market. 

    Other devices that may reach SIL-3 at system level are, TMS320F280015, TMS320F28P550, TMS320F28P650.
