TPS3431: TPS3431 - fast timeout error query

Part Number: TPS3431
Other Parts Discussed in Thread: TPS3435

I am working on a hardware design that requires use of a WatchDog timer. Current Watchdog device I am designing in is the TI TPS3431 (TPS3431 data sheet, product information and support | TI.com).

Could you please confirm that this Watchdog timer doesn’t have a ‘fast’ timeout error state.

Some WatchDog devices require an incoming clock frequency to be within a certain band, whereby if a clock edge is triggered too quickly it will generate an error.

Designing with the TPS3431 requires an inputted clock frequency faster than its timeout specification, but there is no issue with designing a clock frequency too fast?

  • Hi Robin,

    Thanks for your question!

It sounds like you are asking about timeout vs window watchdogs where timeout watchdogs need a response before a set time while window watchdogs require a response between a set amount of time. Please see the diagram below:

The TPS3431 is a timeout watchdog and will not detect a "fast" timeout error state.

One other timeout watchdog recommendation I have would be the next generation TPS3435 which features improved timing accuracy, low Iq, and on-the-fly adjustability.

    I hope this helps!

  • Hi Andrew

Thank you for your response. I was not aware of the terminology for 'Window' vs 'Timeout' so that is very useful. I can confirm my use case is best suited for a timeout watchdog so the TPS3431 (or your suggested TPS3435) is applicable.

    Thanks

    Robin

  • Hi Robin,
