TMS320F2800156-Q1: Total deadtime calculation when using both MCU and Driver deadtime features

Hi TI Team,

I am currently designing a motor drive system using the TMS320F2800156-Q1 MCU and the DRV8161 gate driver.

I have configured the deadtime settings as follows:

  • MCU (TMS320F2800156): ePWM deadband module is set to 1000 ns.

  • Gate Driver (DRV8161): DT/MODE pin is hardware-configured for 370 ns deadtime.

Could you please confirm the expected total deadtime observed at the MOSFET gates?

Is my understanding correct that the actual deadtime will be the maximum of the two (i.e., 1000 ns), and the driver's deadtime does not add up to the MCU's deadtime (not 1370 ns)?

    Thank you for the extended patience. I unfortunately can only speak to the F280015x deadtime, but I would assume the deadtime settings do not add together. Since the F280015x ePWM deadband (1000 ns) is longer than the gate driver's deadtime (370 ns), the gate driver's 370 ns deadtime essentially becomes redundant in this configuration since the MCU is already providing adequate deadtime protection.
