TMDSCNCD280039C: University Renewable Energy Capstone – C2000 Platform Enquiry

Part Number: TMDSCNCD280039C
Other Parts Discussed in Thread: PMP23338

Hello TI Team,

I am part of a university engineering capstone team developing a renewable-energy power electronics system focused on grid-connected inverter and battery energy storage control.

Our project is investigating a digitally controlled photovoltaic and battery-integrated inverter system using cascaded current and voltage control loops, MPPT control, bidirectional battery power conversion, and grid-connected inverter control. We are also planning implementation of synchronous reference frame control and PLL synchronization as part of the digital control architecture.

We are currently evaluating the TMDSCNCD280039C C2000 controlCARD platform for integration with a SiC-based power stage and would appreciate guidance regarding suitable C2000 development resources, recommended evaluation hardware, and digital power software support for this type of application.

The target hardware scale is approximately 3 kW, selected to balance practical laboratory implementation, safety, cost, and available development time within the capstone project scope.

The project is currently in the advanced simulation and control development stage, including:

  • cascaded voltage/current loop implementation,

  • bidirectional battery converter control,

  • DC-link regulation,

  • digital PWM implementation,

  • digital delay and sampling effects,

  • and converter stability analysis.

We are particularly interested in:

  • recommended C2000 development kits and interfaces,

  • Digital Power SDK resources,

  • inverter and PLL reference designs,

  • educational support pathways,

  • and any guidance regarding practical implementation of digitally controlled renewable-energy converters using the C2000 ecosystem.

Any recommendations or guidance would be greatly appreciated.

Thank you for your time.

Kind regards,

Alexander Jones

  • Hi Alexander

For your work pmp23338 seems to be a good match. This is 3.3kW PFC which can also work as single phase grid connected converter. It utilizes the single phase SPLL and implemented on F280039C MCU. You can download the firmware from the latest digital power SDK. For more detail, please visit

  • Thanks for the reply Amir. Are there any similar reference designs for a DC-DC converter that could be used as bi-directional converter for a battery connected to a DC-link bus at approximately 400 volts (will be connected to separate lab inverter with 240v output)?

I assume it would be possible to modify the linked components but then we wouldn't be following the reference design at all. This would likely extend the build beyond the scope of our project. So hoping there might be a better option for the DC conversion component that follows a reference design?

  • Hi Alex

For bidirectional DC-DC, you can refer TIDM 2002.

    Thank you
