TMS320F28374S: What are the consequences of incorrectly configuring RWAIT when using the TMS320F28374S?

When using the TMS320F28374S chip, our flash initialization configuration differs from the manufacturer's example code, as shown in the figure below: on the left is our current configuration where RWAIT is set to 2 when operating at 200 MHz, and on the right is the example code configuration where RWAIT is set to 3 when operating at 200 MHz.
Currently, in production, approximately 4% of the chips directly enter an illegal interrupt and fail to operate, while the remaining chips work normally. For those chips that passed functional testing at the factory, what is the risk of them failing to operate normally after long-term use, and what types of faults might occur?

 

  • If the RWAIT is not configured correctly then the CPU will be reading the flash before it is ready.  This may work on most devices under nominal conditions or in a lab environment.  However there is risk that this could fail later under different conditions in the field.  The minimum RWAIT settings are required to ensure proper operation accross voltage, temperature, lifetime, and unit to unit variation.
