TMS320F28335 Powerpad Connection

Other Parts Discussed in Thread: TMS320F28335

I see from data manual that the the PowerPad on the TMS320F28335 is NOT connected to ground on the die (note in  section 2.1 Pin Assignments).

Does this mean that I can connect the PowerPad to any plane or do I need to connect it to a floating plane?

  • Ed,

Connecting a PowerPAD to GND is generally the recommended practice since the GND plane is a relatively large heatsink on most boards.

See the following post (note that what he says about the F28069 is applicable to the F28335):
    http://e2e.ti.com/support/microcontrollers/tms320c2000_32-bit_real-time_mcus/f/171/t/159373.aspx

Note that the PowerPAD often (but not always) has a high resistance path to the chip GND so it would be best to either tie it to a GND plane or an internal floating plane.  The PowerPAD ground should not be used as a replacement for the GND pins of the device.

However, there are some chips (not the F28335) where the powerPAD is strictly mentioned to be tied to ground.  As always, the recommendation is to follow the datasheet.

    Thank you,
    Brett
