Grounding the Powerpad?

While going through the gerbers of TMS320F28335 control card, I found out that the powerpad was connected to the ground plane. Generally for all ICs with powerpads; I've noticed that they are connected to the ground plane. Can I know what is recommended by TI, is grounding the powerpad a must or optional?

Hello Gautam!

Did you read 3107.TI_thermal_pad.pdf? In general, it seems, it described in the manual (SPRS439M p.14).

Yup Igor, covered both SLMA002G and SLMA004B..... ("The powerpad on the bottom side of the PTP package is not connected to the ground (GND) of the die")

We're using BGA package... and our control card has 28335 with BGA package and in connected to ground! This has created all the confusion. Whether to connect the powerpad to ground or not!
